About me

About me

I currently lead the DfE Kernow English Hub, facilitate the NPQLL, am a Transforming Your School’s Reading Culture trainer, an ECT mentor facilitator and a co-opted governor in my local primary school.

However, in my previous position as an Assistant Head Teacher in a mid-sized (320 pupils) Cornish primary school, I led English across the entire primary phase. I have experience in Reception and Year One but have primarily taught in Year Two and Year Six.

I am passionate that all children leave primary school able to confidently seize all the opportunities that await them in their future educational journeys; I believe being an effective reader, writer and communicator is key.

I have had experience of building a comprehensive whole school reading and writing curriculum which delivers not only the required content of the statutory National Curriculum but also offers students a rich, current, and varied literacy diet.

I have developed successful teams to increase capacity and have greater impact. I was solely responsible for leading the redesign of a whole-school curriculum but collaborated closely with subject leaders to maximise its effectiveness. Through my curriculum work, I was able to integrate reading into the curriculum outside of English, as was noted in a recent Ofsted report:

Pupils have access to a diverse range of texts, including those that support them to expand their vocabulary and subject knowledge across a range of curriculum subjects. Ofsted; 7th April 2022

I have a clear understanding of what lies ahead for each age group due to my experience working in and leading throughout key stage one and key stage two.

I love to learn, which means I keep up to date with the latest research and best practice linked not only to the development of English but also in the fields of cognitive science and teacher development. I understand the complexities which face both classroom practitioners and school leaders and am therefore passionate about building effective relationships to ensure my support improves the outcomes of the children within your own unique school community. I hope you find my blog posts and accompanying resources useful and if you would like my in-school support, I look forward to meeting you and your children in the near future.
